The Stand Off in Yellowstone

Not sure which end of the bison to believe in this encounter. A pack of wolves in Yellowstone National Park surrounded this lone male bison as one at a time they approached, looking for an opportunity to attack. Now the bison seems to be sending mixed messages to this wolf, first by sticking its tongue out at the wolf while at the same time lifting its tail straight up. The tail alone can mean one of two things, maybe more. First he’s not so happy with the wolf and is planning to charge or it is planning to “discharge” as we like to say. Take a dump in other words. “Charge or discharge” is a common question we ask during these photo tours.

We had several opportunities to photograph wolves during several of the semi-private photo tours I held last winter in Yellowstone. This coming season filled up very early on but I was able to just recently reserve the one snowcoach I use for my photography tours.
