Overview: The magnificent towering cliffs and red rock canyons of Southern Utah are incredible anytime of the year but when you throw in the brilliant yellows of the Cottonwood trees in autumn it adds a whole new dimension to the scene. A more spectacular landscape would be difficult to find anywhere in the world making this a photographers paradise. Add to this the possibility of photographing a few dramatic sunrise and sunsets photo along with our world renowned star filled sky for evening photography. You’ll also have the expertise of Nikon Asia Spokesman David C. Schultz to help you improve your shooting skills and share some of his favorite locations and tips. These are booked as private or small group tours with David and since autumn is a very busy tour season it is recommended that you reserve a spot early. This Tour is suitable for beginners to advanced photographers and they are geared towards helping you as an individual improve your photography skills. Whether you are in need of lessons or just an experienced guide to get you to the perfect locations at the best time of day David is very happy to help. Moderate hiking may be required.
We time your Autumn in Southern Utah Photography Tour to take advantage of the fall colors in the lower desert canyons as well as up in the higher mountain areas we’ll visit. Each day the weather conditions will be considered before confirming the exact location we’ll head. You MUST understand that weather plays a major role in nature photography so you’ll need to be flexible with the changing conditions. “Poor weather” can sometime yield the most interesting photo opportunities so please keep this in mind. We will try to include at least one evening of night shooting depending on how clear the sky is when we’re at an appropriately interesting location. Lodging is not included but we’re happy to help with suggestions on where to stay. Transportation for up to 3 guest will be included. Fuel is extra.
Day By Day Itinerary
Day 1:
We meet around 3pm in Torrey, Utah at the Noor Hotel which is just outside the Capitol Reef National Park west entrance. After checking into our hotel, if you have not already done so, we head out a few miles down the road to photograph sunset before returning for dinner in Torrey.
Day 2: We will leave around 6:30am for sunrise at (7:30am) and we’ll make our way towards Hanksville and the Caineville Wash area to one of David’s favorite locations around Factory Butte. There’ll be many photo opportunities and how far we make it will depend on what we find along the way and the road conditions. We’ll try to be back at Torrey by 3pm so we can head out again for sunset which is at 6:50pm. Afterwards we’ll return to Torrey for dinner. Depending on conditions this could be a nice opportunity for night sky shooting and we’ll make that call accordingly.
Day 3:
We’ll leave Torrey at 6:30 am for sunrise at a yet to be determined location in or around the Park. After breakfast we’ll explore one of the narrow canyons within the within the area depending on conditions. This will be a moderate hike which should give us great light and the ability to capture the brilliant yellows of the Cottonwood’s against the deep red sandstone walls. Later that afternoon we’ll take a short drive outside of Torrey into the aspen groves on Boulder Mountain. The trees should be at their peak color this time of year. The sunset location will be determined depending on what has been covered to this point and the weather conditions. There are a few locations on Boulder Mountain which give spectacular views eastward overlooking the red rock canyons of the Waterpocket Fold and Capitol Reef. 
Day 4:
We leave Torrey at 6:30 so we can start the drive over Boulder Mountain and to our next destination, being the town of Bryce Canyon. Along the way and near Escalante we’ll encounter beautiful vistas along one of the most scenic highways in the States.
We’ll arrive at the town of Bryce Canyon where you’ll find lodging available then head a very short distance for sunset. After dinner and depending on the weather we may try to do some night sky photography.
Day 5:
We’ll grab a quick early breakfast before heading a short distance to capture sunrise. A short 2 mile hike may be possible in the morning depending on trail condition and participants abilities. Next comes lunch then we take a break for the afternoon allowing for time to rest after the hike and perhaps have a review by David of your work so far. Sunset will find us back out photographing nearby.
Day 6:
An early start for sunrise, perhaps exploring one of the nearby viewpoints depending on what we’ve captured so far. We’ll then go back for breakfast. A short distance away is a place called Red Canyon where we may stop to photograph depending on time. The drive back to Salt Lake City is approximately 5 hours non-stop.
